COVID-19 infections in Thailand are rising, especially cases of the easily transmissible KP.2 sub-variant, also known as FLiRT, with a total of 1,880 infections being reported between May 5th and 11th, 11 of whom have died, according to the Department of Disease Control.
Since the beginning of the year, to May 11th, a total of 14,937 COVID-19 cases were reported, of whom 104 have died.
Dr. Yong Poovorawan, head of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine of Chulalongkorn University, said in his Facebook Post today that health officials have been closely monitoring the rise in infections adding, however, that the JN sub-variant of the Omicron variant is the dominant variant spreading worldwide, particularly its mutation, the KP.2 sub-variant, which is easily transmissible.
Despite the increase in infections, he said that most of the patients exhibited mild symptoms, except among vulnerable groups of people, such as the elderly and those with comorbidities.
